The community is located just a couple miles east of interstate 5; along Crown Valley Parkway and Antonio Parkway; just north of Ortega Highway.
Construction of Ladera Ranch began in 1999. The community was carved out of the O’Neill, Avery, & Moiso families’ 23,000 acres Rancho Mission Viejo cattle ranch, which was the largest remaining working ranch in Orange County.
Many long time residents of Orange County can remember coming to the valley that Ladera Ranch occupies to pick fresh fruit right from the orange trees.
The Villages at Ladera Ranch
Ladera Ranch is developed into nine “villages”, within each village, individual builders developed an area called a neighborhood. There are ten or more neighborhoods per village. The village names are:
Oak Knoll Village
Echo Ridge Village
The Amenities at Ladera Ranch
Five of the nine villages have clubhouses themed on a particular architectural style that is emphasized within that village. There are also parks, pools, playgrounds and open areas within each village.
The Covenant Hills village is a gated community which is closed to the general public, but accessible to all card-carrying residents of Ladera Ranch. There are no other gated villages in the community.
In addition to the various clubhouses, the community has a private water park and skate park, 18 community parks, a dog park, six smaller neighborhood pools, many pocket parks and green belts, shopping districts called Mercantile East and Mercantile West Shopping Centers, and miles of hiking/biking trails that connect to Doheny Beach and Dana Point Harbor.
With miles of running and biking trails that complement nine villages, there’s a place for everyone that seeks nature, convenience and a home that will provide lasting memories and connections.
The Activities at Ladera Ranch
The community sponsors many events throughout the year. The annual 4th of July Celebration which starts with a 10k / 5k race and then a community parade. In the afternoon the park is set up like a carnival with arts and crafts, activities, inflatables and baking contests. Later in the afternoon a band plays on stage until dark when a 30-minute choreographed fireworks display closes the day.
In addition to their signature 4th of July event they hold a Summer Concert series, Family Campout, Movie night in the park, Spring and Fall Festivals, National Night Out, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Santa visit, Bark, Biscuits and Brew event for our 4 legged friends as well as partnership events with local charities and vendors.
There are plenty of activities for youth of all ages as the community is well represented by AYSO, Ladera Football League, Little League Baseball, Lacrosse, NJB Basketball, Gators Swim Team, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturing, and YMCA Adventure Guides. The community also has a Teen Leadership Council which is composed of 25 youth between 7th and 12th Grades who assist with programming and activities for community youth.
The “Laderalife” at Ladera Ranch
LaderaLife is the official community services group of the LARCS, the Ladera Ranch management company. LaderaLife quotes Hodding Carter as their main theme for their vision for Ladera Ranch’s community environment.
“There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One is roots; the other, wings.”
– Hodding Carter
LaderaLife goes on to describe their vision for the community as follows:
“Ladera Ranch was founded on one singular ideal — to create a community that enables us to give our families roots and wings. As a result, an environment has been created that offers the charm and safety of a small town. One where neighbors wave and smile, meet in the cul-de-sacs for evening conversations, and where exclusive community events offer unique experiences and memories to last a lifetime. This mindset is why families are attracted to our community and everything it offers. From our pet-friendly parks to our close-knit clubs, groups, and programs, Ladera Ranch is a community that proves we are better together. It’s a place where one can be playful and feel young. It’s a place where one can rejuvenate and recharge. And most importantly, it’s a place where one can plant roots and grow wings.”
